Ice Age Trail Updates
Hikers should be aware that the Ice Age Trail is not a static entity. As the Trail evolves toward completion, its route changes over time as volunteers build new sections and other sections are rerouted or closed. Weather (flooding, storm damage and heavy snow) can alter Trail navigation and access. Humans activities such as hunting and land management (e.g., logging) can also affect Ice Age Trail use.
The following notes describe new sections and reroutes not described in the Companion Guide excerpt above and updates on navigation and access when weather and/or human activities affect the Trail.
East Twin River Segment
Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 97f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 44
Logging activities on this segment have made it impassable. Long-distance hikers are advised to use a road walk instead from Rock Ledge Rd. to Princl Rd. (east to west hikers) or Princl Rd. to Rock Ledge Rd. (west to east hikers). (06/09/09)
Woodland Dunes Segment
Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 95f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 49
Volunteers from the Lakeshore Chapter have opened a beautiful new Ice Age Trail segment through Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Reserve, just west of Two Rivers. Click here to see a map. (12/16/09)
City of Manitowoc Segment
Ice Age Trail Atlas Maps 95f and 94f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 51
The section through Schuette Park (Clay Pit Rd. to Broadway St.) has been blazed and is well maintained by the city’s parks department and Lakeshore Chapter volunteers. (03/24/09)
LaBudde Creek Segment
Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 90f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 57
Come hike a new segment of the Ice Age Trail constructed in 2008 and 2009 by Lakeshore Chapter volunteers and others from around the state via Mobile Skills Crew projects and numerous other workdays. The segment is located just east of Elkhart Lake. Click here to see a map. (08/26/09)
Connecting route: LaBudde Creek Segment to Greenbush Segment
Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 90f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 57
On account of opening the new LaBudde Creek Segment and the desire to route hikers onto safer roads, the connecting route between these two segments has changed from that shown/described in our two guidebooks. If hiking the Ice Age Trail from east to west, from the southern terminus of the LaBudde Creek Segment at Garton Rd., turn right and go west 0.4 miles, crossing State Road 67. At Golf Course Rd. turn right and go northwest 0.7 miles. At County Road J turn sharply left and go southwest 0.7 miles. At County Road A turn right and go west 1.3 miles. At County Road AP turn left and go south 1.3 miles. At County Road P turn left and go east 0.4 miles to the start of the Greenbush Segment on the south side of the road. (08/26/09)
