Blue Hills Chapter
RUSK COUNTY
The Ice Age Trail route through Rusk County is dominated by two distinct landscapes. The first, in the northern half of the county, is the Blue Hills—once a great mountain range. Made of 1.6 billion-year-old quartzite, they are older than the Appalachian Mountains and most of the Rocky Mountains. The peaks have been worn down by millions of years of erosion. It is no wonder that the Chippewa Lobe came to a halt at the Blue Hills about 15,000 years ago.
The second dominant landscape is the lakeland district which extends into Chippewa County. No segments of off-road Ice Age Trail have been constructed in southern Rusk County to date. |
