Trail Map and Current Conditions

This map shows locations of all official Ice Age National Scenic Trail segments (blue lines; actual trail is marked with yellow blazes) and unofficial connecting routes (green lines; actual routes are unmarked). Double-click to zoom in and explore the Ice Age Trail route in detail.

The data shown on this map is for general information purposes only. The Ice Age Trail Alliance gives no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of these data. It is strongly recommended that only the Ice Age Trail Atlas and Ice Age Trail Companion Guide 2008 be used as official resources for information about the Trail.

Please note that as the Ice Age Trail evolves toward completion, its route changes over time as volunteers build new sections and other sections are rerouted or closed. Weather and activities such as hunting and land management (e.g., logging) can also alter Trail navigation and access. Pushpins on the map above and detailed comments below are intended to keep Ice Age Trail users up to date on current Trail conditions and route changes (compared with the Ice Age Trail Atlas and Ice Age Trail Companion Guide 2008).

If you take a hike on the Ice Age Trail, please let us know how it went. Trail user reports are key to our ability to keep the Ice Age Trail well-maintained and user-friendly. If you notice something during your hike that you think should be included on this page, please let us know by contacting the Ice Age Trail Alliance main office (800-227-0046, info@iceagetrail.org). As you hike, please keep in mind that the Ice Age Trail is largely built and maintained by volunteers. We can always use your help! Take a look at our online calendar and visit our volunteer center to learn how you can get involved.

Devil's Lake Segment reroute

effective date: Oct 31, 2008

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 61f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 152

The section of the Ice Age Trail leading north from South Shore Road to the intersection with the Devil’s Lake State Park Uplands Trail has been rerouted to eliminate a portion of the Trail badly damaged by flooding. The north and south access points for the rerouted section remain the same; the new route now travels to the west of a scenic gorge instead of to the east.

Sauk Point Segment Reroute

effective date: Mar 24, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 61f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 155

At a recent trail building project, volunteers crafted a short section of new Ice Age Trail so that the “official” Trail route no longer needs to veer off to the parking area on Solum Lane. There is still a spur trail from the parking area.

Baraboo Hills:New Trail Segment

effective date: Jun 06, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 60f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 161

Hundreds of volunteers from near and far flocked to Baraboo in October of 2008 to help complete the Baraboo Segment. The new >5-mile segment highlights the Baraboo Riverwalk and a scenic, forested ridge on the UW-Baraboo/Sauk County campus.

Dane County:New Trail Segment

Cross Plains Segment - New Trail

effective date: Jul 27, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 65f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 133

Volunteers recently crafted a new section of off-road Trail and upgraded the signage throughout the entire Cross Plains Segment.

Blue Hills:Reroute (temporary)

Southern Blue HIlls Segment Reroute

effective date: May 10, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 11f, 12f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 274

The northernmost mile of this segment (i.e., south of County Road F) is currently closed at landowner request. For long-distance hikers walking east to west, as you approach the end of the segment, turn east on the unnamed road that intersects the Ice Age Trail shortly after the second crossing of Moose Ear Creek and walk east three-quarters of a mile out to County Road F. (If that sounds confusing, it’s because County Road F bends 90 degrees near the end of the segment, bordering the northern portion of this segment on both the north and east.) Follow County Road F north and then west as it bends 90 degrees after its intersection with County Road O. Resume off-road walking north of County Road F on the Northern Blue Hills Segment.

Chippewa Moraine:Reroute (permanent)

Reroute on Firth Lake Segment

effective date: Sep 07, 2010

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 16f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 265

A portion of this segment crossing private land is now closed. The new route is as follows: Eastbound: Continue walking south on County Hwy E to 245th Ave. The distance from the trailhead on Hwy E (near Camp Nawakwa) to 245th Ave is 0.9 mile. Then proceed east on 245th Ave for 0.92 mile to the trail entrance on the north side of 245th Ave. Westbound: Proceed across 245th Ave on the trail to a side trail to your left. This distance is 1.09 mi. Follow a lightly marked trail to 245th Ave (gravel road) and turn right (westbound) for 0.92 miles to County Hwy E. Turn right and walk (facing traffic) on Hwy E 0.9 mile to the westbound trailhead sign near Camp Nawakwa.

Dane County:New Trail Segment

Madison Segment - New Trail

effective date: Jun 21, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 66f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 129

Volunteers have recently opened/rerouted the section of the segment passing through scenic University Ridge Golf Course land between County Road M and Woods Rd. Parking is a bit tricky for day-hikers interested in hiking the section through U-Ridge. On weekends, park at UW’s Noer Turfgrass Research Center on the west side of CR-M and then hike west. On weekdays, park on Flagstone Dr. east of CR-M, then EXERCISE CAUTION crossing the very busy CR-M to pick up the Trail at the Noer Center. You can also park at the University Ridge golf course lower lot; be sure to depart before the gates are locked at dusk. Hikers are welcome to use the restrooms and snack bar at the golf course clubhouse. No facilities are available at the Noer Center.

Dane County:Reroute (temporary)

Verona Segment - Temporary Reroute

effective date: Aug 25, 2010

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 66f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 128

Construction work on the Badger Prairie Health Care complex has necessitated some reroutes of the Ice Age Trail between where the IAT splits off from the Military Ridge Trail and where it passes through Badger Prairie County Park north of Business 18/151 (Verona Ave.).

Fortunately, a new bike trail is now open between County Road PD and the Military Ridge Trail Park & Ride lot just south of Business 18/151 (Verona Ave.) on Old PB. Hikers can use the new bike trail from the Badger Prairie Park road through the tunnel under Verona Ave. for a much shorter and safer detour around the construction at the Badger Prairie Health Care complex. Southbound hikers can see the bike path to the southeast as they leave the prairie to enter the Shelter #1 parking lot, and can get to it by walking a short distance east on the park road. The Ice Age Trail and the bike path will continue to share the tunnel after the construction ends.

Heritage Trail:Addition of Trail Map Boxes

Addition of Trail Map Boxes

effective date: May 17, 2010

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 57f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 165

Volunteers from the IATA’s Heritage Trail Chapter have installed Ice Age Trail map boxes at the following trailheads and trail access points:

- On the Portage Canal Segment at the intersection of Highway 33 and Edgewater Street, just north of the Wisconsin River.

- On the Portage Canal Segment at the kiosk just north and east of the Highway 33/Agency House Road intersection.

- At the kiosk on Agency House Road where the Portage Canal Segment ends and the Marquette Segment begins.

- On the Marquette Segment where the Ice Age Trail crosses Clark Road.

- On the Marquette Segment at Governor’s Bend County Park.

Heritage Trail:Segment Closure (temporary)

Marquette Segment Temporary Closure

effective date: Nov 01, 2010

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 57f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 170

This segment is closed in parts of November and December for gun deer-hunting seasons. This segment crosses private land and is closed periodically at landowner request. Staying off closed segments across the state during hunting seasons is critical to maintaining the good relationships with private landowners on which the Ice Age Trail relies.

Dane County:Reroute (permanent)

Verona Segment - Permanent Reroute

effective date: May 28, 2010

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 66f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 128

There is a new underpass of Business 18/151 that the Ice Age Trail now uses; the Ice Age Trail crossing of that road and its continuation down to the Military Ridge Trail crossing are now just a bit west of what is shown in the Ice Age Trail Atlas. Trail users can still access the Ice Age Trail from the Military Ridge parking area shown in the Atlas.

Dane County:Maintenance Notes

Verona Segment - Maintenance Notes

effective date: May 28, 2010

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 66f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 128

The portion of this segment between the Military Ridge Trail south to County Road M was roughed up by flooding in 2008. The northern part of this stretch bordering wetland to the northwest and a sewer berm and Badger Mill Creek to the southeast was flooded for 500-600 feet again in August 2010 despite the City of Verona Parks Department's addition of layers of gravel to raise the trail's surface level in 2009. It is possible to get around this "lake" by relatively easy bushwhacking on the sewer berm. A longer detour, requiring one-half mile of city street walking, is to take the Military Ridge Trail west to Lincoln Street, and Lincoln Street 0.5 miles south across the footbridge to rejoin the trail.

Another chronically wet area between the Lincoln Street foot bridge and the trail's bridge crossing from the south to the north side of Badger Mill Creek was fixed in May of 2010 when volunteers constructed roughly 275 feet of boardwalk and puncheon. In the fall of 2010, the chapter plans to begin building a reroute of the rutted path north of the quarry near Highway M to higher ground on the east side of the quarry.

Dane County:New Dispersed Camping Area

Verona Segment - New Dispersed Camping Area

effective date: Dec 22, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 66f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 128

This segment is now home to a dispersed camping area created specifically for long-distance, multi-day Ice Age Trail hikers. Click here to see a map showing location of the camping area. The camping area has no facilities and is a “camp within sight of this sign”-type area. It offers multi-day, long-distance hikers a good spot to camp right on the Trail in an area of the state where such opportunities are limited. The site is NOT intended for use by those looking to do a one-night out-and-back hike.

Dane County:New Trail Segment

Montrose Segment - New Trail

effective date: Oct 07, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 67f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 126

In late September of 2009, more than 60 volunteers devoted more than 1170 volunteer hours to crafting a new off-road segment of the Ice Age Trail in southern Dane County. The new section of Trail extends east from the Badger State Trail to Piller Road.

High Point:Reroute (permanent)

Wood Lake Segment Reroute

effective date: Oct 26, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 25f, 26f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 247

At an October 2009 trail-building event, more than 50 volunteers from around the state and beyond joined the High Point Chapter on the Wood Lake Segment to build more than 200 feet of boardwalk, construct a quarter-mile reroute to incorporate fantastic views of Wood Lake and upgrade four miles of Trail signage. One result is that the Ice Age Trail route now follows the southern half of the Wood Lake Loop as opposed to the northern. The northern portion of the loop that is not part of the Ice Age Trail has white blazes.

High Point:Maintenance Notes

Jerry Lake Segment Maintenance Notes

effective date: May 06, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 22f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 255

The section that runs from the Jerry Lake parking area north to Forest Road 572 has been logged out with downfall from the winter. A strategically fallen large white pine across the South Fork of Yellow River between Forest Road 572 and Forest Road 576 provides a temporary crossing of the river. The US Forest Service, Ice Age Trail Alliance and others are working to secure a possible reroute and new bridge installation for coming years.

High Point:Maintenance Notes

Lake Eleven Segment Maintenance Notes

effective date: May 06, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 21f, 22f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 258

The section between Hwy 64 north to Forest Road 558 (also known as Trucker Lane), where a tornado wiped out an old-growth hemlock forest several years ago, continues to present a maintenance challenge. The limited existence of trees on which to hang IAT blazes and the rapid growth of raspberry bushes and other underbrush make for a difficult and potentially confusing passage. Trail maintainers hope to work hard throughout this growing season to keep the section navigable.

Indianhead:New Trail Segment

Straight Lake Segment - New Trail

effective date: Oct 19, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 3f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 297

Volunteers from across the state and beyond joined the IATA’s Indianhead Chapter to craft ~1.75 miles of off-road Ice Age Trail tread at a recent Mobile Skills Crew event. The new portion of the segment extends into the heart of Straight Lake State Park, Wisconsin’s newest state park. Additional Mobile Skills Crew volunteer events are planned for 2010 to add additional off-road miles to the segment.

Lakeshore:Segment Closure (temporary)

East Twin River Segment - Temporary Closure

effective date: Jun 09, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 97f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 44

Logging activities on this segment have made it impassable. Long-distance hikers are advised to use a road walk instead from Rock Ledge Rd. to Princl Rd. (east to west hikers) or Princl Rd. to Rock Ledge Rd. (west to east hikers).

Lakeshore:New Trail Segment

Woodland Dunes Segment - New Trail

effective date: Dec 16, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 95f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 49

La Budde Creek Segment to Greenbush Segment - New Connecting Route

effective date: Aug 26, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 90f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 57

On account of opening the new LaBudde Creek Segment and the desire to route hikers onto safer roads, the connecting route between these two segments has changed from that shown/described in our two guidebooks. If hiking the Ice Age Trail from east to west, from the southern terminus of the LaBudde Creek Segment at Garton Rd., turn right and go west 0.4 miles, crossing State Road 67. At Golf Course Rd. turn right and go northwest 0.7 miles. At County Road J turn sharply left and go southwest 0.7 miles. At County Road A turn right and go west 1.3 miles. At County Road AP turn left and go south 1.3 miles. At County Road P turn left and go east 0.4 miles to the start of the Greenbush Segment on the south side of the road.

Langlade County:Conditions Report

Parrish Hills Segment Conditions Report

effective date: Jun 02, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 31f, 32f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 227

The segment requires a ford across the Prairie River. The bottom of the river is firm and the water level is usually below the knees.

Depending on water levels, the segment also has several wet crossings, which may require detours and off-trail navigation and can lead to soggy feet and pants. (The photo above is an example of such a crossing.) For those uncomfortable with navigating around large wet areas, a road walk along Five Cent Rd. west to County Road H skirts several of the wet areas. Active logging is occurring on county-owned land south of the Prairie River ford so caution is advised.

Old Railroad Segment Reroute

effective date: Sep 28, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 34f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 220

A short section of the Trail within this segment was recently rerouted. Hiking east to west, as the Trail passes Veteran’s Memorial Park and Jack Lake, hikers will arrive at Pence Lake Road. Rather than continuing north along a fire lane on the old section of Trail, hikers should walk west on Pence Lake Road approximately 300 feet, head north on the ~1/4-mile new section of Trail, then bear west where the new section of Trail meets the old.

Langlade County:Reroute (temporary)

Kettlebowl Segment Reroute

effective date: Sep 14, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 36f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 216

The section of the Ice Age Trail that formerly ran between Polar-Price Road to Sherry Road is closed at landowner request due to logging.

Langlade County:Reroute (permanent)

Kettlebowl Segment Permanent Reroute

effective date: Sep 14, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 35f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 216

Thanks to efforts by a volunteer with the Langlade County Chapter, a short reroute on this segment just south of the Kettlebowl Ski Area eliminates some hiking along Kent Fire Tower Rd. The upshot is that hikers moving in either direction will want to take a left turn instead of a right turn when intersecting Kent Fire Tower Rd., hike a very short distance along the road, and then continue with off-road hiking.

Marathon County:Reroute (permanent)

Ringle Segment Permanent Reroute

effective date: Jun 10, 2010

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 41f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 208

A change in land ownership has closed a short section of trail immediately south of Mole Brook Road. Bypass the closed section by following Meadowlark Lane from Mole Brook Road to the southern end of Meadowlark Lane, where you’ll find a driveway. Head down the driveway to pick up the Ice Age Trail as it continues south to Poplar Lane.

Eau Claire Dells Segment - New Trail

effective date: Aug 14, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 41f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 209

A long-closed portion of this segment north of County Road N at Fire Lane Road and Partridge Road has been reopened. Blazes and signage have been updated and logging debris has been cleared. A volunteer has adopted the segment and continues to upgrade it. We are in the process of providing a better crossing at Thornapple Creek. Reopening this segment provides about 2 additional miles of off-road trail and eliminates approximately 2.5 miles of road travel. The reopened section intersects Thornapple Creek Road about 3/4 miles south of County Road Z. A short road-walk is still required along Thornapple Creek Road to reach the portion of off-road Trail north of County Road Z (leading into Dells of the Eau Claire County Park).

Marathon County:Reroute (permanent)

Eau Claire Dells Segment - Permanent Reroute

effective date: Aug 14, 2009

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 40f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 209

Volunteers have completed a short reroute within Dells of the Eau Claire County Park. The Trail formerly crossed County Road Y and went south on the bridge, then continued to the east on the south side of the river. It now travels straight across County Road Y and continues to the east on the north side of the river. It rejoins the previous route after crossing the river on the new dam and bridge located near the swimming area. The reroute provides a much safer crossing of County Road Y than what was previously required.

Marquette County:Reroute (permanent)

Connecting Route to Chaffee Creek Segment - Reroute

effective date: May 01, 2008

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 52f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 177-183

The connecting route access to the Chaffee Creek Segment described in the Atlas and Companion Guide is incorrect. Hiking south-to-north along Hwy CH in Marquette County, the route is incorrectly described as heading north up Becker Rd. to reach the start of the segment. The correct route requires hikers to continue past Becker Rd. on Hwy CH until Hwy CH intersects with Czech Ave. in Waushara County: Walk north on Hwy CH, cross the Marquette/Waushara county line, then continue north 1 mile. At Czech Ave. turn right and go east 0.4 miles. At 5th Rd. turn right and go southeast 0.7 miles. At 6th Ave. turn right and go south 0.6 miles to the end of the street. Here, the Ice Age Trail intersects the road. Turn right onto the Ice Age Trail and go south 1 mile to the southern trailhead of the Chaffee Creek Segment, then turn around and head back north to start hiking the full segment.

During wet times of the year some of the off-road trail is soggy but hikeable. There often is a wet spot about half way through that can be walked around on a berm adjacent to the trail. This is typical for this section of trail during the spring and persisted throughout the summer and fall of 2009. For a short time during ground thaw, heavy snow melt and spring rains may produce flood water on the trail near the bridge across Spring Brook.

A new parking lot and short spur trail at Shannon Road about 1 mile east of Hwy K provides easy access to the north end of this popular trail segment. Construction of trail north from Shannon Road to Pleasant Hill Road has begun. The corridor has been cleared and the route has been pin flagged. Hikers can easily walk this new section of trail but tread work will not be complete until final construction scheduled for August 27th and 29th, 2010. Please consider joining us for the great project. Several older sections of trail to the east of Stations Way Road are being rebuilt to IAT standards. Most of the work was finished by Spring 2010 but minor work continues. Pin flags still mark several of the construction areas.
