Make Some Noise for the Trail, Comment on the DNR’s Trail Network Plan

Comment period open through August 7.

Hikers are a pretty quiet bunch. No loud gear. No noisy equipment. Most times, people don’t know when hikers are around. And, that’s usually a good thing. Hikers don’t negatively impact their surroundings.

Sometimes, hikers need to get loud. Especially when it comes to voicing their opinion on the trails they use and love—including the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

In some areas of the state, non-silent recreational groups are pushing to use the Trail in ways that would be detrimental to hikers. These groups are good at being vocal and sharing their opinion. It’s time for hikers to do the same.

Support keeping the Trail safe for hikers, submit comments now!

Please submit comments on the Wisconsin DNRs Trail Network Plan. Tell the DNR about the trails you use and the ones you may use in the future. Make your voice heard. Your thoughts and opinions are just as important as other Trail user groups. Be sure to tell the DNR:

  • It’s important to keep all sections of the Ice Age Trail free from motorized use.
  • They should help close Trail gaps by acquiring land for the Ice Age Trail.

The web page to submit comments is difficult to navigate. To make it easier, follow these steps:

On the left side of the page, you’ll see three questions. Questions 2 and 3 are the most important to provide input on. Question 1 is cumbersome and not required.

  • For Question 2. Corridors not developed as trails. PLEASE PROVIDE COMMENTS about areas that are not currently developed as Trails. Click the arrow to the right of the question to get the input box. The Ice Age Trail Alliance suggests typing something like:
    • Help complete the Ice Age Trail! I urge the DNR to emphasize planning for the Ice Age Trail and acquiring land for it, so gaps can be reduced.
  • For Question 3. Additional Comments. PLEASE PROVIDE COMMENTS about keeping the Ice Age Trail a footpath. Click the arrow to the right of the question to get the input box. The Ice Age Trail Alliance suggests typing something to the effect of:
    • Please keep Ice Age Trail sections, including those on rail-trail corridors, FREE from motorized use.
  • Be sure to submit your feedback by clicking the Submit Button at the very bottom of the page (underneath the DNR logo):

  • For Question 1, which is not required, select a specific portion (or portions) of Trail to comment on. Consider selecting the following rail-trail corridors, which are experiencing pressure from motorized user groups:
  • Corridor 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 27, 30, 102, 103, 104 = Ice Age National Scenic Trail

Or, select other areas of the Trail you favorite, by determining which corridor a specific portion of the Trail is in (by using the map), then select it from the list.

You could also, scroll through the list of Trail names and check the box next to the name anytime you see “Ice Age Trail”.

(Each corridor name you select has additional sub-questions underneath; to answer them, click the arrow next to the corridor name:
