Good evening, Trail Builders!
Last weekend we started corridor clearing through an easement in the Valley View Segment ahead of future Ice Age Trail and the removal of a short road walk along Mound View Road and Saracen Way, and we’ll continue this work on March 1st. This is an opportunity to see a new piece of Ice Age Trail and the work it takes even for a small easement to prepare it for use.
What: Clear brush and trees through the trail corridor in the Glacier’s Trail Easement in preparation for future Ice Age Trail. We will NOT be burning the piles, but instead hauling them out of the easement for removal by others. The easement is too narrow for any other options and there is a lot to clear. Hand tools will be provided.
Needed: Anyone interested in helping, but if you are a NPS Certified Chain Sawyer or Certified Swamper and willing to perform those roles please let me know.
When: Saturday March 1st 9 AM to 2 PM
Where: Valley View Segment along Blue Cedar Drive, north of Saracen Way. See attached map. Parking near star #1.
What to wear/what to bring: Please dress appropriately for the weather. Long range forecast is around 30 degrees. We will not be burning, but still plenty of pokey things to tear some materials. Leather gloves are a must. Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch.
Volunteers in Parks (VIP) program: The National Park Service asks that all volunteers file, on a yearly basis, a Volunteer Service Agreement form. In the unlikely event of an injury, a VIP’s medical expenses are covered by the federal government. Go to: https://www.iceagetrail.org/wp-content/uploads/packet-individual-301a-exp-10_2024.pdf
The form is expired, but I recently completed mine for 2025 and it was accepted by NPS.
If you plan to help on March 1st, please reply to this message. This is very important so we can plan for enough tools and supplies. It also allows me to communicate with you, should plans change due to weather, etc. I am aware this conflicts with a planning habitat restoration project elsewhere in the County, but we’d be happy for your help.
If you have questions, please email (mark.a.graczykowski@gmail.com), call or text (920-901-3921) and I hope to see you March 1st!
Namárië,
Mark Graczykowski
