Fellow IAT volunteers,
Join us on Saturday, March 8 as we restore more of the 4.5 acre East Woods in the University Ridge section. Two key goals of this project are to improve the health of the natural environment, providing critical habitat for migrating and nesting woodland songbirds and enhancing the trail user experience. This is very satisfying work.
Who: All volunteers welcome. No experience necessary! Hand tools will be provided.
Sawyers: Your help is needed. We will be clearing thick ‘old growth’ buckthorn from the north side of the woods.
Swampers: Have you completed the requirements to be an official NPS swamper? If you have, I need you!
What: Clear invasive trees and brush in the East Woods @ University Ridge Golf Course. Build brush piles to be burned next winter. Please read the attached, “How to build a brush pile.”
When/Where: Meet at 8:50 AM Saturday morning, March 8, at the O. J. Noer Turf Research Facility, 2502 S. Pleasant View Rd., Verona. See attached map. We will work from 9:00AM-2:00PM.
Parking: Please park in the Noer parking lot and meet at the spot shown on the attached map.
What to wear/what to bring: Please dress appropriately for the weather. Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. If you have safety glasses, forestry helmet or hard hat, bring them along.
Volunteers in Parks (VIP) program: The National Park Service asks that all volunteers file, on a yearly basis, a Volunteer Service Agreement form. In the unlikely event of an injury, a VIP’s medical expenses are covered by the federal government. Go to: https://www.iceagetrail.org/wp-content/uploads/packet-individual-301a-exp-10_2024.pdf
If you can help on March 8, please message me at edspoon@charter.net. This is important for a couple of reasons: I need to plan for enough tools, etc. for the group. And, should plans change due to inclement weather, etc., I’ll need to contact you.
I look forward to working with you on this project! If you have questions or concerns, please get in touch.
Happy Trails–
