Highlights of Rock County Segments

The Storrs Lake Wildlife Area contains two miles of trail through mixed hardwoods, tall prairie grasses, wildflowers, and dry kettles. The area is home to sandhill cranes, deer, turkeys, pheasants, and owls.

The IAT meanders through the town of Milton on sidewalks, past the historic Milton House Museum. The old Milton College sits atop the terminal moraine of the last glacial period. The old depot area, Milton Junction, is now filled with restaurants and specialty shops.

The Janesville to Milton Segment travels on an abandoned railroad bed converted to public use. The canopy of trees
and views make it an enjoyable walk.

The IAT uses two of Janesville’s paved recreational trails. The route follows an intermittent stream that once was a large
glacier melt-water river. The route passes Palmer Park, Rotary Gardens, Croak Brewery, and along the west bank of the Rock River into Riverside Park.

The Devil’s Staircase Segment is a “Must See”! The IAT climbs up a century-old stone staircase and travels along the side of a bluff along a natural shelf. There are diverse wildflowers and plants, exposed rock cliffs, and beautiful views overlooking the Rock River. The IAT continues past the Devil’s Staircase.

The Arbor Ridge Segment traverses an area of bedrock hills covered with till from glacial advances much older than those explored by most of the Ice Age Trail. It is opened to great views of mixed hardwood forest and magnificent oaks
