Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter: Wee Walkers – Maple Wayside to Cottonwood Wayside

About:

Hartland became Wisconsin’s first Ice Age Trail Community in 2015, and this walking club was formed to bring people–both adults and “Wee Walkers”–together to enjoy the trail, community, and each other. Start the New Year right by getting your kids out of the house and onto the Ice Age Trail with the Hartland Walking Club’s “Wee Walkers” program–monthly hikes designed especially for tykes! They’d love to have you join them for a walk!

The Walk:

Hartland Walking Club’s “Wee Walkers” invite you and your kids to continue their 2023 series. This year, they are on a mission to hike the ENTIRE Hartland Segment of the Ice Age Trail–out AND back!! They started at Centennial park in January and will head south each month in 2023 until the full segment has been! Anyone who accomplishes this goal with us will earn a free “Hartland Segment” pin! Starting at the Maple Wayside, hikers will head south to the Cottonwood Wayside for an out and back hike on the Ice Age Trail. This hike will move at a “toddler’s pace,” as they stop to explore and enjoy the surroundings along the way. Check their Facebook page for updates.

Details:

This month, their out-and-back hike will total approximately 1.5 miles. They will trek from the Maple Wayside to Cottonwood Wayside and back. Unfortunately, this section of trail is not stroller-friendly. Please dress for the weather and consider bringing water and snacks. If conditions are unsafe we will cancel.

Walks are led by 5-year-old Simon, 3-year-old Ophelia, 1-year-old Rhea, and their mom, Christina, an Ice Age Trail volunteer (and kid at heart). All ages are welcome; kids must be accompanied by an adult. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome.

Christina Callies and the Hartland Recreation Department organized this hike. Register in advance (ensure that you receive notification in the event this hike is postponed or canceled) or simply show up at Nixon Park. There is no fee for this activity.

Location:

Meet at the parking lot at the Maple Wayside. You will find Christina and her kids layering up by their car.

The Hike:

Explore the National Ice Age Trail with us! This month we will be hiking the Stony Ridge Segment near Eagle. This segment connects directly to the Blue Spring Lake Segment to the west and to the Eagle Segment to the northeast. The State Forest Headquarters is an interesting stop along the IAT. It has a museum dedicated to wildlife, geology, and local economic history. The display cases feature a number of artifacts found along the Ice Age Trail.  A gift shop as well as flush toilets and a water bottle refill station are available there.

Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter – Hartland Walking Club – Winter Hike

Join us for a winter night hike on the beautiful Hartland Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail!

The Hike:

We will hike from Nixon parks new ice-skating rink and head south for an approximately 2.5 hour, four mile out and back hike. The full hike begins by walking about one mile on a paved trail. We will then traverse through a half mile along the snowy Hartland Marsh Trail, which boasts an impressive new boardwalk built by Waukesha/Milwaukee Co. Chapter Volunteers. Once through the marsh, the route continues for another half mile on a paved trail to our turn-around point at Highway KE.

Details:

This hike is suitable for hikers of all ability levels. There is very little elevation gain on this route and the biggest challenge will likely be navigating the snowy and icy conditions. Anyone not wishing to hike the full distance can turn back at any time and return to Nixon Park. All hikers are welcome to stop in the newly – renovated warming house for some complementary hot chocolate!

All ages are welcome but kids must be accompanied by an adult. Please dress for the weather and plan to walk through snow and ice. If it’s a clear night, the trail may be lit by and almost – full moon, But we strongly recommend hikers bring a headlamp or flashlight. If the wind chill is below zero or conditions are unsafe we will cancel.

Location:

We will meet at Nixon Park’s new skating rink. Follow the yellow Ice Age Trail event signs.

Contact Information:

This hike will be led by members of Hartland’s Ice Age Trail Community Committee. More information can be found by contacting the Hartland Recreation Dept.
